DAY TWO AT AMES- May 11

Today was quite the day. I started off working with a second grader who has autism, the same kid from yesterday, and we were able to get a lot done. We made a bumble bee with the OT, which helps the kid with operation skills that will be useful in school. Then after the OT left the second grader did some math. His AID explained to me that they use a system called touch math, where you draw dots on the number that you are adding or subtracting, to see it visually (photo below). With this method, we were able to add and subtract 3 digit numbers. Then as a reward for doing SO GOOD on the math problems we played with play dough. In order to ensure focus, there is a token system where the child has completed 5 tasks, big and small, he gets a reward, in this case play dough, but most of the time is it watching a snowflake video!

I then went and worked with the same third grade class as yesterday. I read with a girl and helped her with pronouncing words and ready with fluency. We then ate lunch and went out to recess to play kickball. Sadly my team lost but I got to second base! The kids seem to have a lot of fun which made me happy to see. Then before I left all the kids gave me a huge and said they can't wait to see my tomorrow. As I was leaving one girl gave me a spider ring to match the class! That's all for today, stayed tune for more tomorrow :)
